LETTER FROM SHERIFF LEON LOTT

TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS

As you begin to plan your vacations and trips, please think "Travel Safety." Victimization as a traveler can be prevented if we keep in mind that all crime is an opportunity and we can control the opportunities that are provided to the criminal. Just because you leave Richland County to travel does not mean that the Richland County Sheriff's Department is any less concerned about your safety. Below is a list of tips that may help prevent the chances of your becoming a victim:

The fact that you have these concerns and are looking for solutions and preventative measures is a tremendous step in the right direction. When you ask yourself the question of whether your child is involved in a gang, ask:

1. Use traveler's checks and credit cards. Take with you only the cards and information necessary to have a fun and successful trip
2. Only take with you what is absolutely necessary. Do not over pack.
3. Always be aware of your surroundings. Stay alert.
4. Carry wallets in your front pocket.
5. Carry purses or backpacks close to your body and in the front.
6. Don't look distracted or lost.
7. Pay attention to who may be watching or following you.
8. Check and see if the hotel has a safe and use it.
9. Ask the hotel or local police what areas are safe and unsafe.
10. Don't verbalize where you are staying in public and don't display room keys or hotel information or your rental car agreement out in the public eye.
11. Avoid looking like a tourist. Try to blend in with the locals.

Please contact the Richland County Sheriff's Department if we can be of assistance to you or if you would like to receive free crime prevention training at 576-3033 or Richland County Sheriff's Department

Sincerely,
Leon Lott
