COMMUNITIES ON PHONE PATROL The Eyes and Ears of RCSD
On September 15, 2003, twenty-five people representing at least ten different community and civic organizations met at Ballentine Park to form the Ballentine-Dutch Fork Area Communities on Phone Patrol (COPP). Under the guidance of Richland County Sheriff's Department Community Action Team, these community leaders laid the groundwork for COPP, a multi-community crime watch organization. Deputy Amanda Lee is the Community Action Team Officer for Northwest Richland County. COPP now coordinates the efforts of nineteen or more neighborhood associations to provide extra eyes and ears for local law enforcement agencies. Equipped with cell phones, volunteers are able to connect instantly with 911 dispatchers to report criminal activity and other emergency situations when observed. COPP also mobilizes and unites the member neighborhood organizations to assist each other as special circumstances may warrant. Through this display of community unity, COPP contributes to keeping the Ballentine-Dutch Fork residential areas safe for all residents.
03/21-COPP was a Co-Sponsor of a Gang Activity Awareness Seminar presented by the Richland County Sheriff's Department Gang Task Force. The other Co-Sponsors were State Representative Nathan Ballentine and the BDFCA.
02/25-UPDATE: COPP WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE RECENT IDENTIFICATION AND ARREST OF TWO INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH AT LEAST ELEVEN HOME BURLARIES IN THE AREA!!!!!
